More about this ottawa condo
268 First Ave was first built between 1912 and 1914 and was known as The Ottawa Ladies’ College, just prior to when World War 1 began. The college was established in 1869 for women in Ottawa to have the opportunity to continue their education at the post-secondary level. The different curriculums that were available to study were math, language, science, handicrafts, and athletics. During the Second World War, the building was used as a residence for members of the Canadian Women’s Army Corps.
The building ultimately served as part of Carleton College and later, Carleton University in 1957. When Carleton University started to become more advanced and expand, the building was converted to be the location for the Ottawa Board of Education in 1970.
Like other historical buildings in Ottawa, keeping the buildings authenticity through the preservation process was a high priority. To keep the history and architecture preserved, the building was officially designated as a heritage property on May 20th, 1997. What was also the pushing point to make this building a heritage building was that the original architect was Allan Keefer, whom worked on the Centre Block of Parliament after the infamous fire in 1916. Keefer has also designed many homes in Rockcliffe Park.
In 1999 the formerly known Ottawa Ladies’ College was converted into condominiums by Routeburn Developments, with Barry J. Hob and Associates taking over as architects. This 5 storey building was being converted into a 17 unit luxury condominium with some of the units reaching 4000sqft, which is rare to find in today’s condominiums. While this building was being modernized, Routeburn and Barry J. Hobin kept the highlighted details of Edwardian Classicism that Keefer modelled the building after.
211 Second Ave was constructed during the conversion of 268 First Ave in 1999. Since the condominium was going to be an addition to the pre-existing building the developer incorporated Edwardian style so both buildings would “blend” together seamlessly. 211 Second Ave stands at 4 stories and contains 26 one, two, and three bedroom units.
268 First Ave units feature gleaming hardwood flooring, high ceilings with crown moulding, expansive windows flooding each room with natural light, a gas fireplace in the living area, a spacious master bedroom with ensuite, and a private balcony to make it your own little urban oasis. The kitchens feature granite countertops, a tiled backsplash, stainless steel appliances, lots of cupboard space, and an additional space to have a breakfast nook.
211 Second Ave units feature hardwood flooring, high ceilings, expansive windows, spacious open concept living spaces, a gas fireplace in the living area, and a private balcony. The kitchens feature laminate countertops, ample cupboard and counter space, five appliances, and a thru-window the living area.
