More About This Condo
History
St Charles Market was built in 1908 and has been a pivotal landmark for the area of New Edinburgh. Designed by renowned Quebec architect Charles Brodeau, who is also known for designing other landmark buildings in Ottawa, including St Francis Catholic Church on Wellington Street and the St Charles School on Springfield Rd (which was converted into a condo building in 1996 and is known as Schoolhouse Square).
The last service held at the church was in 2010. By 2013 was deconsecrated (when a building is transferred from sacred to secular use) and later designated as an Ontario Heritage Building. Keeping the community in mind Modbox Developments purchased the building in 2013 and kept the church open for public access.
Not wanting to change the original structure of the church, the developers decided to build a condominium complex around the church. What catches an onlooker's eye is the bell tower. Erected in 2013, this bell used to ring three times a day (6am, noon, and 6pm). It was also to signify church services, and occasions like weddings and funerals. When the church was deconsecrated in 2014, so was the bell, and it was taken down. Though the bell tower is no longer in use it is still illuminated with the cross.
St Charles Market
Recently built in 2021, St Charles Market is a mix of condominium units and townhouses. The exterior of the building, which stands out as the backdrop of the church, has stunning brickwork, notable floor-to-ceiling windows, and ornate orange balconies.
Each unit features high ceilings, hardwood floors, large windows that flood the unit with natural light, and large glass doors which fully open to the private balcony.
The chef-inspired kitchen has been outfitted with stainless steel appliances, a tiled backsplash, and a kitchen island with an overhang that’s perfect as a breakfast bar. The open-concept living and kitchen design allows you to entertain guests with ease. The primary bedroom (of the two-bedroom units) features a 4 piece ensuite.
The amenities at St Charles Market include a yoga studio, fitness area, kids’ play area in the lounge room, golfing bay, kitchen, men’s and women’s bathrooms, an outdoor dining/lounge area, and a party room with a kitchen and a bar.
