Sandy Hill

Sandyhill is located east of downtown Ottawa. The neighbourhood is bordered by the Rideau Canal to the west and east is the Rideau River. Rideau St bordered by the north and to the south is part of the Queensway and Nicholas St. This neighbourhood is where a vast majority heritage homes and embassies are located. The neighbourhood was originally owned by Louis-Theodore Besserer who then donated part of the land to the University of Ottawa. It was then subdivided and become home to Ottawa’s lumber barons. Sandy Hill’s residences today are a mix of those who work for the embassies, heritage homeowners, senior citizens, and students who attend Ottawa University or the Le Cordon Bleu.

With Sandy Hill being in very close proximity to the Byward Market and Rideau Centre, residents and those planning to move to this area are within walking distance of the Rideau Centre LRT and Oc Transpo Station. The LRT runs through the downtown core to the east end Blair Station and to Tunney’s Pasture to the west. There are also local buses that run in that area to bring you to the Rideau Station.

Majority of Ottawa’s embassies are located in Sandy Hill and stretch across the entire neighbourhood. Also in this neighbourhood is Ottawa University as well as Le Cordon Bleu Ottawa.

One of the major events that happens within the Byward Market / Sandy Hill area is Canada Day. The downtown area is filled with thousands of people wanted to see the events happening around the neighbourhoods to celebrate Canada Day.

Though there are not any fenced in dog parks within the Sandy Hill area, there are several parks you can bring your dog to (with leash) for them to enjoy. There is Strathcona Park, Robinson Field, and St Germain Park.

If you are looking for a cool spot to bring your children to during the summer months, Sandy Hill Park has a wading pool that is open from July to the end of August. Opening dates are staggered due to weather and maintenance but you can click here to find out the exact dates.
